I don't claim to be a genius - and I can't figure it out. Only thing is it is not a triangle... the two small triangles are not to the same proportion.
Hmm...

Sadly I'm not a genius but I can explain this.
The apparent loss of area takes place as a result of imprecision in the fit of the pieces in the two diagrams. The edges do not coincide as the colour coding and thick black outlines gull us into thinking.
Did you notice that the line segments are terms of the Fibonacci sequence? If you square a term of the series your result equals the product of the preceding and succeeding terms plus or minus one. No coincidence I suspect.

for all those out there who are as daft as I am, it's really an illusion - neither alleged hypotenuse is straight - the top one is a trough, the bottom a peak , the respective areas between amount to that single square...

I just said that...
