The Pope In Austria - with a note to the clergy...

The "determining factor" in Liturgy is "our looking to God"
"The interior disposition of each priest, and of each consecrated person, must be that of “putting nothing before the divine Office""

You know, in my time I've lived with a few priests but in regard to the Divine Office two come to mind immediately - one sped through it like lightning ; giving absolutely no concern for what was being said at all - it wasn't a prayer - it was more like doing twenty laps of the swimming pool before breakfast... the second priest had a US full four edition set with gold-leaf edging - I doubt if it had been opened more than a few times since his ordination!!!

A priest is nothing without prayer; and yet again our incisive Holy Father , with gentleness and patience; but with grim resolute determination and razor-sharp integrity; lets it be known to all that he understands ; yet is ever-ready to be everybody's shepherd...even those amongst the most antagonistic of clergy.

oh my old curate used to sing his office; and invariably every good priest I've encountered has a battered breviary laden with prayer cards, memorial prayers and post-it notes as reminders for whom to pray for; held together by sticky-tape and good intentions...
A priest without prayer is on a hiding to nothing....
