Is a new job a possibility? You seem so unhappy with where you are working. I don't know if jobs are plentiful in your area or not, but it might be worth looking into if at all possible. Maybe one silver lining is that with a 6 a.m. start, you'd get off early enough to go for a job interview elsewhere?

God bless you.

sorry 'fraid here it doesn't work like that - am really clever [IQ 186 and EQ off the scale - typical INFJ I'm afraid] but it means nothing on the job market...must have applied for 300+ jobs over the past few years and have had 4 interviews !!!

Honestly, I do feel for you. It's not a fun thing to be slumming it workwise. I did note you mentioned before elsewhere you have a shot at a different job. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and prayers said as well. You really could use a change and a break. I get the impression that the UK is still very credentials oriented. I'm not saying that the US doesn't like its "paper" too - but there seems to be not a lot of paths for the very bright who lack the paper. In the US there are a lot of different ladders. I'd bet my bottom dollar that you'd make an excellent teacher, were you so inclined, and frankly any number of things. What about real estate? Is it possible to network with people and "let them know you're looking" sometimes the best way to get a job is not so much WHAT you know, but WHO you know. Don't be afraid to ask. The worst that can happen is they say "no, I don't know of anything" but they MIGHT say "yes."

How about web design or computer programming? I bet you'd be very good at it. Microsoft, I believe has a series of courses you can supposedly take online - then there are tests and so forth, but you get "paper." How much course work would you have left to get a degree? I bet once you had that a lot of doors would open for you. I realize that with all your family responsibilities with 3 kids and a wife you can't just drop everything and live like a student - but in the UK is it possible to take one or two classes an academic quarter at night?

God bless you Paul, I'll keep you in my prayers that something good will turn up for you.

I read your blog and Holy Smoke every day. If Damian Thompson's offer was serious, is that not worth looking into?

Good luck!

really sweet of you both, but I have neither the time, energy nor money to even contemplate doing anything like that...
It was nice of Damian I'll admit, but what he admired was my ability to take the mickey out of the contemporary church - something not conducive to the herald - I submitted a couple of articles but I think they were laughed off the screen by the editors - My friend remonstrated with me for even trying - according to him I should be writing books not articles - I don't know anymore; and I don't mean to sound narcissistic or laden with self-pity but I really don't think I can think about anything at the moment - something will turn up, and until then ? business as usual and I can't really complain....

Write the novel. The one that starts with your friend asking you why you became orthodox... it was spine-tingling. Get something out there to counter Phillip Pullman. DO it !
